Alter-native Energy Festival was first staged in 2007 in Gibellina (Sicily), one of the most alter-native places in the world as Gibellina was completed destroyed by an earthquake in 1968 and rebuilt in another place using contemporary architecture concepts. The old destroyed village then become the “Cretto di Burri“, the biggest land art artwork in the world.
So, the Festival found its natural home in this “alter-native” village in Sicily.
The first edition lasted for two months, from the 1st of August to the 30th of September, with concerts, conferences, talk shows, dance performances and a final event, a contemporary dance performance in a wind farm, the first live show completely powered by wind energy. The epic show was called “Coming soon, future energy“.
“Coming soon, future energy” closed the first edition of the Festival with the perfect picture of dancers under a wind turbine, the ultimate synthesis of the Festival mission: using the arts to promote green energy to the wides audience possible.
Since then, Alter-native Energy Festival has been touring Sicily and Italy with other 7 editions, always entirely powered by private sponsors and donors, to show that another way of producing cultural is possible when the arts meet green companies, to a win-win situation.
The latest edition of the Festival was produced in 2015. The eight edition of Alter-native Energy Festival toured all nine Sicilian provinces with three-months events in public squares, schools, cultural centres.
In eight editions AEF produced International and local artists such as Giovanni Sollima, Ivan Segreto, Nudozurdo, Havalina, Truc a Trois, Habana Abierta, Kof, Gotan Project DJ Set, Frankie HI NRG, Francesco Cafiso, Francesco Buzzurro, just to mention some protagonists of AEF.
